The Tyranny of Choice

Reprinted with the kind permission of the author Barry Schwartz

Abstract

This article investigates why the amount of choice Americans are given is in fact a source of discontent. Professor Schwarz divides the consumers into two groups: those who will do anything to ensure that they get the “right” item, and those who settle for less. He gives the various reasons why the people in the first group are never satisfied and why those in the second group are in fact healthier. He also shows how the greater the choice, the more likely we are to be drawn into the search for the optimal purchase.
